Armageddon

one movie a day

Armageddon

why I loved it !

Armageddon was one of those instant classic for me and started my love for Michael Bay's work. That man just know what he's doing and is honest about it. He wants to please the largest audience possible by using the most clichés humanly imaginable. And this is what Armageddon is. You get awesome action scenes, romance, and a conflicted father daughter relationship. And if you let yourself at ease and just enjoy the show you will even get a teary eye at the end. Enjoy !

Oz the great and powerful by Sam Raimi

One movie a day

Oz the great and powerful by Sam Raimi

Oscar Diggs is a circus magician without morality. He is transported to the land of Oz during a storm. He thinks having hit the jackpot when the nice Theodora tells him that he is the Great Magician expected by all the country. Although he don't believe to be that person, he decides to play this role. But he is perhaps not the only one to hide who he really is

Charming

At the beginning, the new blockbuster from Disney fails to make us forget "Alice in Wonderland" released in 2010. Over time it acquires its own existence and we can finally enjoy some original ideas in the use of 3D (although I deplore this trend). James Franco plays beautifully, is very seductive and quite convincing in the role of anti-heros. I must acknowledge that Mila Kunis was for once able to play without requiring me to kill her. By cons Michelle Williams is a bit disappointing in her role as a moron witch (but it is probably unfair to blame her when that is what the role wanted).

Life of Pi

one movie a day

Life of Pi

why I loved it !

It's a double sided story. Wonderful on one side and terrifying when you finally know the truth. Most of the credit goes to the CGI artists who did one hell of a job. The music adds a layer to the marvelous imagery and great performance from both the cast and the CGI animals. A must see who received two Oscars.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 trailer

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2

The Croods by Chris Sanders and Kirk Demicco

One movie a day

The croods by Chris Sanders and Kirk Demicco

When the cave in which they live is destroyed by an earthquake, the Croods are separated from all they have ever know. Spurred on by the young "Eep" and her new friend "Guy", the family is going through extraordinary jungle. Like the changing world , the family understands that it will have to evolve.

Pleasurable

Certainly the Dreamworks studio often blithely follows fashion initiateid by others. The beautiful redheaded heroine does not prove the contrary. Nevertheless, the Croods are extremely well made, neat, crazy and will please the whole family.

A miracle.

It's like turning air into gold...
A miracle...
And so, I was wrong.

Watchmen

Watchmen

why I loved it !

This is probably my favorite movie of all time. As an history enthusiast I just love the way they tied the storyline to real main events. The Zack Snyder's touch is there and magnify the story with his usual slo-mo effect every fight becomes more nasty; every sequence even a romantic one or a terrifying one becomes more  intense and delivers the emotion in a more powerful way. Combine that with a perfect soundtrack and  very deep and interesting characters (Dr. Manhattan played by Billy Crudup almost stealing the show) and you've got yourself one film not to miss. My final advice : see the director's cut; 3 hours of pure happiness.

Grave of the Fireflies by Isao Takahata

One movie a day

Grave of the Fireflies by Isao Takahata

In 1945, the city of Kobe is bombed by American planes. Seita and Setsuko were remain behind while their sick mother had joined a bomb shelter. Surprised by an attack, they were uninjured but their mother, badly burned, died shortly after. The neighborhood having been destroyed, children took refuge with an aunt who is rather reluctant.

An emotional outlet to the horrors of war for its author

The story is based on the 1967 semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka. He wrote it because of the guilt he felt for what had happened this year of 1945. Although it is not claimed as such, many people see this anime as wearing a profound anti-war message. It shows the life of people who did ask nothing and yet are victims of the war. It is poignant from start to end and very well done. The drawings of Kobe city for example are very truthful.

Kingdom of Heaven

one movie a day

Kingdom of Heaven

why I loved it !

Mostly because I'm an history nerd and I love the period of the crusades even if the film does not follows the story to the letter it is mostly at the benefice of the viewer. This movie gives you perspective on religion and Ridley Scott did a great job at recreating Jerusalem, city that is nothing and everything...
