Bridget Jones's Diary by Sharon Maguire

One movie a day

Bridget Jones's Diary by Sharon Maguire

Bridget is a single thirty year old woman, slightly too much, blunderer, who smokes like a chimney, drinks like a fish and goes every year for New Year's Eve with her parents. It is during one of these celebrations that she realizes she must change if she doesn't want to be alone forever. To keep her good intentions, she begins a diary.

There is always a little time to watch it !

Bridget Jones is one of those "feel good movies" you never get tired of. Of course it is not great Cinema, but it does not prevent the performance of Renée Zellweger to be very impressive and flawless. Bridget will make you laugh and cry if you can look at her with kindness. Want to go further? No problem ! If the second film (Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason) failed to reach the same level, the books of Helen Fielding are full of promise because, as often, a part of the work's soul was lost in the media change.

John Carter

one movie a day

John Carter

why I loved it !

While not being the greatest sci-fi movie out there John Carter is good for what it is : an adventure film on Mars with a bit of romance and a not so subtle subtext about ecology. This is why I strongly encourages you to first see this good blockbuster movie and then read the Barsoom series from which the film was really freely adapted. Where Andrew Stanton gives you a brief introduction to the universe of Mars Edgar Rice Burroughs will give you a myriad of characters and cultures that lives on Mars. And if you have plenty of imagination you'll see that the action sequences are much more epic than the ones you can see in the movie.

I am legend by Richard Matheson

I am Legend by Richard Matheson inspired a lot of movies

Robert Neville seems to be the only survivor of a strange disease that gradually hit others. Day after day, he reproduces the same actions. If things can sometimes seem normal for him, every night, he finds himself trapped home, harassed by his former neighbors and friends, who turned into new kind of vampires.

Brilliant

Those who are attracted to the book because of the movie with Will Smith will be disapponted. Or maybe not. Although the film is very successfull from my point of view, it adds a warrior side that does not initially exists in the character. Neville is fighting every day, but it is against loneliness, despair and penury. In this sense, it is a much more human character.

Richard Matheson develops the idea of a pandemic disease destroying humanity. It will be widely taken up later in films and still exerts a strong influence on our imagination. However, this is not a book about vampires, but rather on the human being, its need for contact and our craze to make a clean sweep on what frightens us.

The Truman Show by Peter Weir

One movie a day

The Truman Show by Peter Weir

The Truman Show tells the story of Truman Burbank in the wonderfull town of Seahaven. This town is well ordered and populated of friendly people. If Truman has lived peacefully in this idyllic context for years, he cannot stop thinking about a girl met in his youth, Sylvia, and would love to travel. However, everything seems to prevent him from leaving.

Questioning

For many reasons we can compare The Truman Show with 1984 (George Orwell) but everything is processed in the tone of comedy.
This film explores the first doubts that feeds Truman about his life and his search for the truth. He speaks about drifts of television and about producers seeking to make programs that make money. How far do we have the right to go for a good "real tv" concept?

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

one movie a day

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

why I loved it !

Because Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is just a good blockbuster movie with a good cast. There is really nothing more to it. His main asset is that it does not try to be a video game movie it's just a movie on it's own that doesn't have much in common with the game except for his title which is a great thing because you really can't summarize an entire franchise of games in one movie.

The vow by Michael Sucsy

One movie a day

The vow by Michael Sucsy

Paige and Leo are a couple to whom everything seems to smile. They don't need anything to live than each other. But after a car accident, Paige has forgotten everything over the past 5 years and Leo. She finds it really hard to understand what could have bring her to this kind of life.

Lovely

The concept of the film is based on a true story. It has a small silly side that I found adorable. I admit even having cried. Rachel McAdams is more than acceptable in this role and her charm does the rest. Unfortunately, Channing Tatum has the charisma of an oyster. He may appeal to other women but I have difficulties to understand why....

Chronicle

one movie a day

Chronicle

why I loved it !

That movie is a masterpiece of storytelling and directing. The director uses consumer grade cameras to convey that third eye that Andrew develops throughout the movie. It conveys that sentiment that Andrew see himself as a god it gives him a new perspective on his world and make the people around him look like insects. And if you don't want to read the subtext let it be known that this movie will make you scream some insanities at the screen while the action is unveiled before your eyes : while being a little budget movie the action sequences will make your jaw drop in awe before the spectacle you'll witness.

Life is beautiful by Roberto Benigni

One movie a day

Life is beautiful by Roberto Benigni

Italy, 1939. Guido is a young Jewish with a great sense of humor. He lives with Dora, his wife, and their son Joshua. They lived happily despite the growing anti-Semitism until being brought by force in a concentration camp. To preserve his child's soul, Guido tries to protect Joshua by turning the situation into a game...

Deliverer

This film is not an ordinary war movie. While some can take umbrage because he dares to laugh about such a serious subject as the Holocaust, others like me will see sincerity and goodwill. Benigni is masterful in this role of a sad clown.
