Planet of the Apes by Franklin Schaffner

One movie a day

Planet of the Apes by Franklin Schaffner

In 1972, the spacecraft Icare travels throughout the universe with 4 crew members. The journey ends when it crashes on a mysterious planet in year 3978. The astronauts quickly realize that things are different there. The human race is dominated by high-evoluted apes which has reduced them in slavery. When the commandant Taylor is captured, the apes Zira and Cornelius became very interested in this weird human.

What if the dominant race had to change ?

Well, you know me a little more now. I loved it for many reasons. An incredible work on the make-up and ape's behavior was done. Did you know that during the pauses, the actors who plays apes hanged with those who played the same ape's race? Incredible huh? The film is based on the novel of the French Pierre Boule. It however takes some liberties by adding nuclear threat and time travel. Once again, a testimony of the time. The closing scene will leave you speechless.

"Be with you" by Takuji Ichikawa

"Be with you" was a great success in Japan . Dramas and Mangas are based on this story

When Takumi’s wife died, he lost a part of himself.  During her agony, she said that she will come back “for the rainy season” to see how her son and husband are doing. On a walk in the near forest, it starts to rain and the incredible happens: she came.

A beautiful poetic fresco

I usually have a lot of imagination, sets and characters appear under my eyes before I have to make an effort. But with “Be with you”, everything is different. I only see a white décor, like a dream, sad dream but incredibly sweet.

Soylent Green by Richard Fleischer

One movie a day

Soylent Green by Richard Fleischer

Soylent Green. Another kind of horror.

In 2022, New York is overcrowded with 40 million inhabitants. There are many homeless and poor people while food is scarce. Most of the population survives thanks to rations produced by the Soylent Corporation. The company launches a new product, Soylent Green who is supposed to be more nutritious and palatable. Robert Thorn, a detective, works on an assassination. Why this notable had seem so troubled before his death? Despite orders to close the investigation, Thorn goes further.

This film from 1973 is based on the science fiction novel “Make Room! Make Room!” of Harry Harrisson. He explores the consequences of unchecked population growth but the film takes liberties with the story.

It was the last film of Edward G. Robinson. Ironically, his last scene is the best part of the film. It shows a concentrate of what humanity would lose if the population grew and resources were consumed without considering. A kind of early ecologic warning.

Who does...

I don't want to go home.

Monsters

Monsters

why I loved it !

Because Gareth Edwards took his two actors and his small crew in the jungle and shot a small budget masterpiece. But beware ! Despite the title of the movie and the poster the film is not about action and CGI like Cloverfield. It's more of a road movie about two people, who despite their differences at first will in perilous situations learn to know each others and have a life changing experience.
You will fall in love with the two main characters each with his (her) own issues played masterfully by Whitney Able and Scoot McNairy.
Jon Hopkins, composer of the original soundtrack did a wonderful job by only using subtle tones in his music giving the movie a new layer of emotions for you to experience.

Men In Black III by Barry Sonnenfeld

one movie a day

Men In Black III by Barry Sonnenfeld

Because Will Smith, that's why

A dangerous alien has escaped from a high-security jail. Then he has travelled in time to prevent his capture and the destruction of his people by agent K in 1969. J is now the only person to remember of K. In his turn, he travels through time to thwart the alien's plans

Initially, I was afraid that the series has lost its offbeat side. But we are quickly reassured with some funny references (wtf Andy Warhol?). The script takes a new direction and focuses more on J and K's relationship with an unexpected epilogue. Will Smith is quite good (but I like him very much so maybe I am biased, I confess). A special mention to Josh Brolin who plays Tommy Lee Jones's character younger (even if he can't be as poker face as his partner).

Sure, that's not a movie about the meaning of life. But made your mind empty and take my pop-corn

He's gonna wreck it !

I'm bad and that's good... I will never be good and that's not bad !

Wreck It Ralph

one movie a day

Wreck It Ralph

why I loved it !

This movie was kind of a surprise to me since it came pretty much out of nowhere in my country. It's a nice change of pace in the video game movie genre since it's definitely a very good one. And why is it a good one you may ask ? Well because it's not an adaptation for a start; this is a movie about video games and not about a video game we know which makes all the difference since a video game takes usually (for the most part) ten hours to finish at best and that the lore about it may be scattered among several titles. And let's face it you can't break down hundreds of hours worth of story into a 90 minutes feature film.
Wreck It Ralph is for everyone really, the kids will find it colorful and funny and the adults will get the most subtle references and try to remember all those characters you've played in your young age.

New World War Z trailer

Israel invaded by the undead
Having read the book I can say that this trailer does give some information about the upcoming movie and in a good way since it looks like they kept some locations from the book like Israel and Russia.
A far less entertaining trailer than the previous one but at least it gives us a bit of information. It's kind of a fair trade. Still I'm not entirely convinced by the "pile of zombies" thing.

The Time Machine by George Pal

one movie a day

The Time Machine by George Pal

Why should you see it ? Because they are some cult films you have to watch in your life !

December 31, 1899. At the dawn of the 20th century, a science lover gathered his friends and said he had traveled back in time with a machine he built. In 1966, a nuclear disaster devastates the planet and the everything changes. The hero manages to 802,701 years. Things are heavenly, but do not be fooled by appearances ....

This film, based on the novel of H. G. Wells, became a cult sci-fi. It shows our universal and timeless fascination for the future. It is also a strong testimony of his time because today it may be hard to conceive of this constant fear of nuclear explosion.

Special effects can almost seem funny, but for the time (50 years already) they are rather impressive and inventive like the decors (Academy Award for Best Visual Effects). The main character is also played well, with the quaint charm I particularly appreciate. Enjoy !
