Soylent Green by Richard Fleischer |
Soylent Green. Another kind of horror.
In 2022, New York is overcrowded with 40 million inhabitants. There are many homeless and poor people while food is scarce. Most of the population survives thanks to rations produced by the Soylent Corporation. The company launches a new product, Soylent Green who is supposed to be more nutritious and palatable. Robert Thorn, a detective, works on an assassination. Why this notable had seem so troubled before his death? Despite orders to close the investigation, Thorn goes further.
This film from 1973 is based on the science fiction novel “Make Room! Make Room!” of Harry Harrisson. He explores the consequences of unchecked population growth but the film takes liberties with the story.
It was the last film of Edward G. Robinson. Ironically, his last scene is the best part of the film. It shows a concentrate of what humanity would lose if the population grew and resources were consumed without considering. A kind of early ecologic warning.
