Catch Me If You Can by Steven Spielberg

One movie a day

Catch me if you can by Steven Spielberg

In the late 60s, the FBI agent Hanratty is charged to extradite Frank Abagnale Jr. wanted for fraud and identity theft. A few years earlier, Frank, teenager, lived with his parents who were struggling to make ends meet. At the time of the divorce, he ran away. When he needs money, he pretends to be an airline pilote, a lawyer, a doctor, ... Hanratty decides to take the case and begins to hunt. Over time, a strange relationship will bind them.

A wonderful cinema duet

The story is based on a eponymous novel by Frank Abagnale Jr which tells the beginning of his life in a romanticized way. DiCaprio is amazing as usual and Tom Hanks quite good. I have less to say, it is that kind of movie that you love or you hate. It includes Spielberg loved topics like family and it has many recipes of comedy movie. It is difficult to store the film in a category: stalking between an agent and a crook or history of friendship? Probably both

Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor

why I loved it !

Continuing on with World War II movies I'm introducing to you Pearl Harbor; a movie that apparently nobody liked but everybody I know seemed to have enjoy ! It is (for me at least) one of the best recent World War II movie. It tells us the events that surrounded the attack on Pearl Harbor, it shows us the attack from terrifying points of view (a bomb, the deck of a ship), and most importantly it stays entertaining for the average viewer by enrobing the real true story by a romance with three characters to identify to.

The Nightmare Before Christmas by Henry Selick and Tim Burton

One movie a day

The Nightmare Before Christmas by Henry Selick and Tim Burton

Jack Skellington, a scarecrow living in the town of Halloween is a master of horror. Jack spend his days preparing the next Halloween party but he is tired of this monotonous life. When he decides to leave, he discovers the town of Christmas and has a great idea. This year, the locals of Halloween will celebrate Christmas !

This is Halloween

One of my favorite movies, seen again and again. It gives free rein to the passion of Tim Burton for the strange and the Halloween party. It's great entertainment, including for children ! The stop motion animation is very neat and the music is excellent. If we have to see a message in it, it is one of tolerance. Jack's normality is very different from that of normal children and this is that misunderstanding that gives birth to problems much more than a desire to scare humans.

A Bridge Too Far

one movie a day

A Bridge Too Far

why I loved it !

Mostly because I'm a huge history nerd and this movie really is like reliving the operation Market-Garden. You can almost take this movie as a documentary about that gigantic military offensive to push the allied forces into the heart of Germany by securing in one attack a serie of bridges. Let the history unveils herself before your eyes !

Gattaca by Andrew Niccol

One movie a day

Gattaca by Andrew Niccol
In the future, you can choose the genotype of your "perfect" children. Although it is officially banned, compagnies use DNA testing to select their staff. Gattaca is a center of spatial study and research for people with impeccable genetic heritage. Jerome, an ideal candidate, sees his life destroyed by an accident. Vincent, a natural child which is relegated to menial tasks, dreams of going to space. Each will allow the other to get what he wants.

When the gene is more important than anything else

This is one the best sci-fi, but given the way things are going, it may be no more "fiction" soon. In a totally different world, injustices have changed but are still there and cheaters live in fear of being discovered. This cold and controlling society adds a thriller side to the movie that will give you something to think about. Special mention for the stone faces actors and Ethan Hawke who seemed more alive than ever.

Like Crazy

Like Crazy

why I loved it !

Like Story's storyline has almost nothing new or original but it doesn't matter that much. You can forgive and forget the inherent flaws of the romance genre when you get such a enjoyable ride. The cinematography is beautiful and vibrant. The soundtrack is amazing and well tough. And the cast is incredible at making you feel the pain, the awkwardness and the joy of their so simple yet so complicated relationships.

The Sixth Sense by M. Night Shyamalan

One movie a day

The Sixth Sense by Night Shyamalan

Cole is nine. He has a terrible secret: he sees the dead who are sometimes aggressive and shout at him. This power locks him in a countinuous fear. He didn't speak about it until he meets Malcolm, a child psychiatrist who was shot by a former patient and try to make amends.

They don't know they are dead

The Sixth Sense is not only a wonderful horror film. This is primarily a film about human beings. Bruce Willis reveals himself and is wonderfully displayed in the film, far from the usual bodybuilder he embodies in general. Haley Osment takes meanwhile one of his best roles. It's an almost perfect! But what makes this movie so special is its final twist that will stick you to your seat. However, it is not impossible to see the movie again, because the filmmakers were very attentive to details.
