Training Day

one movie a day

Training Day

why I loved it !

Denzel Washington is just one of those actors... If he is in a movie, it is almost automatically a great one and Training Day does not dodge that bullet. From start to finish you follow an inspector in training (Ethan Hawke). As he gets under the wing of Washington's character you quickly discover a corrupted and rotten world. You realise the fact that moral values are not the same for everyone and while Washington's character cross the line of the unacceptable many times you can't help but notice that he always has an explanation for it and that it's just a common behavior that should be the norm.

Forrest Gump by Robert Zemeckis

One movie a day

Forrest Gump by Robert Zemeckis

Forrest is a young simpleton living in Georgia. Despite himself, he inspired some of the greatest minds of his time. His amazing life is at the center of the contemporary history of the United Sates. A name yet never leaves him, Jenny....

Run !

Another great film (based on Winston Groom's novel). We can adopt several reading grids for this film which recalls through the eyes of a pure and simple man the major american events of the second half of the twentieth century. But the masterful performance of Tom Hanks will make everyone agree (he also won an Oscar for this role). Oscillating between comedy and drama, no one should miss out on Forrest Gump.

Gladiator

one movie a day

Gladiator

why I loved it !

Probably one of the best movie of those two last decades. From the mind of Ridley Scott and the amazing performances of Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix and all the others in between comes an epic story about a man who loses everything. A man who believes that his life is meaningful and whose only goal is to make things right in Rome. Ridley Scott delivers a beautiful movie with the aid of a bright and clever script which captures perfectly the ambiance of the roman empire. The music as usual with Hans Zimmer is just stunningly fitting and embellish the whole film with an aura of bravery and epicness. And for the finally Enya delivers the final blow with a song that you will not forget and that will always make you remember the amazing story of Maximus.

The Emperor's New Groove by Mark Dindal

One movie a day

The Emperor's New Groove by Mark Dindal

Kuzco is a capricious Emperor. For his 18th birthday, he plans to offer himself a new pool on the site of a pretty village. After yet another attempt of Yzma to govern in his place, he dismisses her. She invites him to dinner with the intent to poison him and take his place, but things don't go as planned.... Kuzco is now a llama !

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

This is one of the few Disney that I haven't had the chance to see during my childhood. And it's perhaps not a bad thing ! Kuzco is a totally crazy cartoon that will put a smile on your face. Far from the other heroes of the studio, Kuzco is unbearable and has absolutely nothing of a "brave prince". full-color settings, high color dialogues and catchy musci, the Emperor's New Groove will give you fishing ! Look at emergency.

Pandorum

one movie a day

Pandorum

why I loved it !

I just loved this concept of Pandorum. A sickness of deep space that will make you more paranoid and fearful of everything you see to a point where everybody becomes the enemy. The psychological aspect is very well depicted by the handful of actors and Ben Foster does (as usual) a great job at playing a complicated human being. The movie is low budget and  it shows mostly at the end but the story by itself makes it worth to watch.

Poetry by Lee Chang-dong

One movie a day

Poetry by Lee Chang-dong

In a small town crossing the Han river, Mija lives with her grandson. This energetic woman loves treating her appearance and is full of curiosity. Chance led her to poetry courses. For the first time of her life, she has to write a poem. Seeking for beauty in her environnement, an unexpected event occurs make her realize that life is not as wonderful.

Why?

This film is splendidly refreshing in the sens that we don't know until the end what will be the end. Yoon Jeong-Hee is wonderful and offers a magnificent performance. The final scene, dramatic, deliver one of the greatest lessons: beauty lies also in what is sad.

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and Ryan Murphy

One movie a day

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and Ryan Murphy

Elizabeth has everything you can dream of. Yet she doubts, feels indecisive and in lack of benchmarks. After her divorce, her life takes a real turning point. In order to focus on herself, she decides to travel and rediscover the pleasure of life.

Your are invited to Italy, India and Bali

This movie is based on Gilbert's memoirs, the main character played by Julia Roberts. Far from being free from defects, the film combines still beautiful scenery with a sensitive direction of Murphy. But its real strenght is of course the radiation given off by Roberts, beautiful and inspiring once again.

why I loved it !

A masterpiece of storytelling that's what this movie is. A soldier lives a eight minutes loop of another man's life over and over again with a mission. It could have been a disaster seeing the same thing over and over again but here the main character has a goal which changes everything since the director let us know more informations at every loop. It's very well done, very well paced, the cast is great both main and supporting actors and the finale is kind of amazing. You should watch this now !
