Big Fish by Tim Burton

One movie a day

Big Fish by Tim Burton

While celebrating the wedding of his son William, Edward Bloom tells, for the umpteenth time, how the day of the birth of Will, he caught a huge fish using his own alliance as bait. Will is embarrassed and says to his wife that his father can't be trusted because of all his lies. Will and Edward don't talk for three years. But when he learns that his father is dying, he comes to see him with his pregnant wife. In the plane, Will remembers a story of his father in which he claimed that, as child, he had wandered into a swamp and met a witch who had revealed the time of his death. Stuck in bed, Edward continues to tell his story....

Surrealistic !

This movie is based on the novel by Daniel Wallace. Big Fish revolves around a troubled relationship between a father and a son, a very emotional subjet that touches me. But it is above all an explosion of sun and color, an ode to art, an enchanting tribute served by talented actors. IT will delight the child in you, each new plan will widen your eyes. An original film, totally crazy and yet so simple. Undoubtedly one of the most personal work of Tim Burton.

The Invasion

The Invasion

why I loved it !

While the storyline will sound familiar to many of us (bodysnatchers) the acting and the way things turn bad make up for it. Mutated people truly feels terrifying; they are so calm and emotionless yet so aggressive as soon as they find a prey. Their screech will make you uncomfortable in the best of ways since you should and will fear them throughout the movie.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Michel Gondry

One movie a day

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Michel Gondry

Joel and Clementine only see the bad side of their tumultuous love story. So she made her memory erase to forget everything. Collapsed, Joel meets the inventor of the process in order to do the same, but he rediscovers what he always loved in Clementine and starts to fight to preserve their connection.

One of the best movie role of Carrey.

The idea of a technology allowing to forget everything has a disgusting and so sweet side. But it is mainly about a love story. It is like every other, with its ups and downs, but with a rare intensity. The characters are endearing and well interpreted. Joel will see their accelerated history, knowing that it must end badly. However, we feel the happiness to see them so happy and spontaneous. I loved this side a bit surreal that leaves traces in the whole movie.

Troy

Troy

why I loved it !

An adaptation of the classic "Iliad" from Homer. It's epic, bigger than life, and the battle sequences are way over the top. The assault of Troy is a brutal and visceral spectacle : from the thousands of ships to the armies from all over Greece attacking the city the scale of the scene is just jaw dropping. The duel between Achilles and Hector is also one of the great moment of this movie; literally two movie stars clashing to the death !

Seven years in Tibet by Jean-Jacques Annaud

One movie a day

Seven years in Tibet by Jean-Jacques Annaud

Heinrich, a Austrian mountaineer, is part of an expedition to climb one untouched Himalayan peak when World War II broke out. Taken prisoner by the English, he managed to escape in 1944. Thus began a long wandering that leads him to Lhasa. There he met the 14th Dalai Lama, aged 11, and they became friends.

A film like no other, very involving.

Based on the true story of mountain climber Heinrich Harrer, the movie however takes considerable liberties with the facts. It was widely seen as a propaganda in favor of Tibetan separatism. Since the film, Brad Pitt and the director are prohibited from Chinese territory !

Besides that, it is aesthetically pleasing. The moutain, the costumes, the colors, everything is beautiful to look at. It is through this movie I discovered Brad Pitt which does not deserve all the criticism he has suffered. The young actors depicting the Dalai-Lama are very impressive and radiate peace.

Black Hawk Down

one movie a day

Black Hawk Down

why I loved it !

There is a reason why Ridley Scott is a master cinematographer and this is one of those in film form. Probably one of the best modern war movie at this moment in time. Some people said it was propaganda for the US Army; at best I'd say it's a 144 minutes movie about why you should not go to war. People gets hurt, lives are lost, families are destroyed. And sometimes despite thinking you're doing a favor to someone you'll find out pretty soon that no reason is a good reason to go fight.

The Source by Radu Mihaileanu

The Source by Radu Mihaileanu

Another pregnant woman lost her baby while fetching water at the source. Leila has enough to witness these taboo accidents. She think about the condition of women in the village. She tries to persuade others that men should bring water and relieve women from this task. To convince them, they will go on strike for love.

In jihad against the weight of tradition

It sounds unbelievable but it is indeed today that it happens. This movie has many sources of inspiration, including a revolt of Turkish women who used the same trick to get water to the village. It is wonderfully played by its various stakeholders. Leila especially gave her character a life and a remarkable consistency. The movie speaks quickly unfortunately about many issues that deserve more attention. But the real core of the film is the music and the singing which advences women's struggle. It is also largely beyond the water. Because "the true source of women is not water, it is love".
