Jack the Giant Slayer

one movie a day

Jack the Giant Slayer

why I loved it !

Storyline is kind of basic but the way it is deliver is just great everything from the set pieces to the digital effects makes up for it. The cast is a great ensemble of renown and new actors; but everyone of them delivers amazing performances. Not one of the best Singer's movie but a great entertaining blockbuster.

The Others by Alejandro Amenábar

One movie a day

The Others by Alejandro Amenábar

In 1945, when World War II ends, there is a detached house lost in the fog on the island of Jersey. Grace and her two children with a rare and incurable disease live there, the children can't be in contact with the sunlight. She engages three mysterious people, who one day knocked on the door looking for work, as servants. But then strange events begin. The children then talk to their mother about the "Others" that they have seen several times.

They are there ....

Probably one of my favorite movies. Nicole Kidman is masterful. The sets and staging are perfect. They create an atmosphere conductive to stress. The disease of children adds even more to it. It is also very well distilled to the end. The story's end is psychologically horrible, as it should be in all films of the genre, and for once I did not see that coming !

Yes Man

one movie a day

Yes Man

why I loved it !

Because Jim Carrey never cease to make us laugh to tears. Because the message about changing everything in our life is universal. Most people fear changes in their life and it's not about saying yes to anything, it's about saying no not because we fear the change but because we just flat out don't want to do it. But just once say yes to Yes Man.

Warm bodies by Jonathan Levine

One movie a day

Warm bodies by Jonathan Levine

A strange illness has pushed humanity into a nightmare. They live cooped behind walls in a world of deads. A small team went out to research medecines and R, a zombie, devours the brain of a young man. He gets then his memories and feels the need to protect Julie, the girlfriend of his victim.

What a surprise !

I put "Warm bodies" without expecting much. And what a nice surprise ! I laughed so hard while watching it. The post-apocalyptic world is convincing, the actors playing the zombies too. But what makes the strenght of the film is of course the character of R, cynical and funny, served by an extraordinary actor that this movie made me discover: Nicholas Hoult. We see R evolve, change as the playing of Hoult follows this trend with gusto. However, if you are looking for a zombie movie, go your way !

The Prestige

The Prestige

why I loved it !

The Prestige, directed by Christopher Nolan really is a magic trick. It shows you the ordinary first; turns it into magic and then makes it reappear as clear and understandable as it can be giving you The Prestige.

Les Misérables by Tom Hooper

One movie a day

Les Misérables by Tom Hooper

In 19th century's France, Les Misérables tells the stories of broken dreams. Jean Valjean promises Fantine to save her daughter Cosette from a tragic fate which she is herself a victim. But Valjean, since its release, is mercilessly hunted by the policeman Javert for failing to comply with his parole.

I dreamed a dream.....

Les Misérables is based on the wonderful (but dense) novel by Victor Hugo. However, this adaptation is more based on the musical. I can't say whether it is loyal or not, but we find wonderful songs that are familiar to us and will appeal our ears. The actors, who are not yet accustomed to this form of art, escaped with honor. Anne Hathaway also proves it with her version of the song "I dreamed a dream" that has probably earned her Oscar alone. The movie sometimes falls into the gap "all singing" while it is not necessary, and in the great effects specific to American cinema, however it is impossible to remain indifferent to the magnifiscence of events. As long as it lasts, you will live and breathe with the characters.

300

one movie a day

300

why I loved it !

Since the trailer for the new one is out why not rewatch 300. The movie that gave a career to Zack Snyder and Gerard Butler. The movie that spawned two quotes (This is Sparta, Tonight we dine in hell). The movie that made you and your buddies shout for more violence in the cinema. As the poster say : Prepare for glory !
