Lawrence of Arabia by David Lean |
During the First World War, T. E. Lawrence, officier of the United Kingdom, stationed in the monitoring of the Suez Canal, advises the Arabs in Syria to revolt against the Turks of the Ottoman Empire in order to establish a modern independent Arab nation.
A breathtaking beauty
This film is one the greatest masterpieces of cinema. The AFI ranks it first in the "epic films" category and it was rewarded by seven Oscars, including Best Film, at the 35th ceremony in 1963. It is full of beauty and poetry. Actors are majestic and the visual style has inspired some of the greatest directors of our time (Lucas and Scorsese among others). Its scenario is modeled by the autobiographical work of the liaison officer T. E. Lawrence narrating the Arab revolt against the Turks from 1916 to 1918.
Be careful however, the film is extremely long (over 3 hours), you have to let yourself be hypnotized in order to fully appreciate it.
