The Source by Radu Mihaileanu

One movie a day

The Source by Radu Mihaileanu

Another pregnant woman lost her baby while fetching water at the source. Leila has enough to witness these taboo accidents. She think about the condition of women in the village. She tries to persuade others that men should bring water and relieve women from this task. To convince them, they will go on strike for love.

In jihad against the weight of tradition

It sounds unbelievable but it is indeed today that it happens. This movie has many sources of inspiration, including a revolt of Turkish women who used the same trick to get water to the village. It is wonderfully played by its various stakeholders. Leila especially gave her character a life and a remarkable consistency. The movie speaks quickly unfortunately about many issues that deserve more attention. But the real core of the film is the music and the singing which advences women's struggle. It is also largely beyond the water. Because "the true source of women is not water, it is love".
