Dark Shadows by Tim Burton |
The Collins family leaves England to settle in America and start a new life. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Twenty years pass and Barnabas has everyone in Collinsport at his feet. He is an inveterate seducer..... until he makes the mistake of breaking the heart of the witch Angelique Bouchard.
Every family has its demons....
This movie is a port on the big screen of the 1960's gothic series "Dark Shadows". This is not the Burton's great days, but Dark Shadows is a nice film. In fact, the story and the characters give Burton a simple recipe and he doesn't take risks. Johnny Depp and Eva Green with her toothy smile are very good in their roles. In the same delusion as the Adams Family, Dark Shadows will make you laugh with some good scenes. You can also see some nice costumes and beautiful dark scenery.

why I loved it !
Snow Angels is a terrifying story about a couple in disarray. Beckinsale's and Rockwell's characters deal with a dramatic situation both in a different way. One tries to forget, the other to find the reason behind this tragedy. It's masterfully played by the cast and it gives to the movie it's depth and uneasy feeling when the characters are at their lowest moments.

Humans have discovered the existence of vampires and lycans and are trying to exterminate them. Selene is captured by humans and wakes up 12 years later in a scientific complex. The world she knew has changed but she still hope to find Michael....
Take the same ingredients and start again !
This new movie is clearly to watch for entertainment purpose. And entertain you, it does it well. The special effects are successfull, Kate Beckinsale is great in her role as bad-ass vampire znd the music manages the atmosphere well, with a lot of sound-explosions. The scenario is nice though light, but it is shared by a lot of sequels in general.

Sleepy Hollow by Tim Burton |
1799, inspector Ichabod Crane has a rational mind and scientific methods. He is send to the village of Sleepy Hollow where bodies of the rich bourgeois Peter Van Garrett, his son and the widow Winship were found beheaded. Crane faces on his arrival the elders of the town who tell him that the responsible for these crimes is a headless horseman dead during the war of Independence.
Heads will roll !
Sleepy Hollow is based on the novel by Washington Irving, exit at the end of the 19th century. This is another great performance from Johnny Depp who I found convincing. The story was interesting, but unfortunately predictable. However, this is offset by a well-placed music and especially beautiful costumes. We believe it ! We can still see Burton's great mastering of the fantastic movies.

Beowulf |
why I loved it !
Because it's a tale of epic proportions, it's a story more about the weaknesses of man than just a fight between a monster hunter and some deformed creatures. The motion capture used in the movie is breathtaking at the point where when I saw the movie trailer I tough for sure that the movie was live action. The intro scene and the orchestral chorus accompanying it is memorable and the sound or more of a screech emitted by Grendel was just terrifying when you heard it in the movie theater. A truly good entertaining movie.Mama by Andrés Muschietti

Mama by Andrés Muschietti |
Five years ago, Victoria and Lily mysteriously disappeared after a family tragedy. Since then, their Uncle Lucas and his girlfriend Annabel are looking for them. When the girls are found in a dilapidated shack, they go live with the couple. Annabel tries to give the girls a normal life. But she becomes convinced that the girls are followed by a presence....
Mama....
Despite the support of Del Toro, Mama is finally a fairly conventional horror movie. It is suitable for all those who love stories a little strange without trying at all costs to be afraid. Because frankly, Mama will certainly let enthusiasts of horror movies marble. The movie turns more towards a kind of black poetry and advances quietly between Annabel and Mama. Motherhood is at the center again. Jessica Chastain is also in a very good acting and the two little girls are very promising. A nice movie, so.

why I loved it !
One of the most frightening horror movie I've seen. Danny Boyle had this great idea about changing the zombies's behaviour. In a classic zombie movie the zombies would be slow and only dangerous in large numbers; here you've got very fast zombies capable of running, climbing and even spitting the virus at you. That small yet big change makes even the only zombie on the screen looks scarier than ever.Kara no Kyokai (The Garden of Sinners) by Ufotable

A series of mysterious suicides occurs in an abandonned building in Tokyo. These are young girls who had no history and apparently no reason to commit suicide. While police has no leads, Shiki and Aozaki think of a supernatural explanation and begin to investigate.
A great series of anime
This is not exactly a movie, but I think this anime deserves such a reward. Kara no Kyokai, The Garden of Sinners, is a series of seven Japanese animation films. They are based on the manga of Kinoko Nasu, the famous creator of the Type-Moon studio. If the first movie may seem a bit messy, this defect is offset by the fluidity of the action and the beauty of the line.

It's very rare for me to truly feel in love with characters in a movie but Sam Raimi did what most directors can't do. He fleshed out his characters so well that you get emotionally attached to them. Choosing Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst was the best choice he could have make. Those two actors really shows a great chemistry and gives this action packed movie a heart.Friday, July 5, 2013

Whoever has the true grit is perhaps not who you think
We are talking about the 1969 version, although a remake came out in 2010. The story is based on the novel by Charles Portis. This is the film that earned his only Oscar to John Wayne! It is far from his usual roles. It is a has-been sheriff who finds inspiration through a sturdy temperament girl. This western is of his time and perhaps suffers latency for an audience that is not accustomed to the old movies. The costumes and backgrounds are of course beautiful. A good time, a film in history to see at least once. It includes one or two famous historical mistakes, will you find them?

It's dark humor how I like it : without consensus, violent and despite what you might think very enjoyable if you can take a joke. Just before the Second World War, a British aristocrat, newly widowed, inherited a ranch in Australia. She asks for help from a Australian cowboy and its Aboriginal employees to resist the competition in the livestock trade. But the regions is dangerous and the Japanese planes attacked....
Danger always makes things more intense
Australia is a fully assumed romantic adventure on a huge landscape. It remains, however, far from a masterpiece and Japanese attacks seemed to be a pretext for reunion scene. But, it made us forget the world. The star's couple produces great chemistry, they are two of my favorite actors. Of course the scenery is beautiful and quite savage. A good entertainment.

London, in the early twentieth century. The writer J. M. Barrie is uninspired. His marriage is not going well and his career is downward. One day, he meets Sylvia Davies and her four boys in the parc. A strong friendship develops between them five, but the grandmother doesn't see it positively. Through this relation, James finds inspiration and writes Peter Pan.
A child's soul
Finding Neverland is a beautiful movie, very aesthetic. The stars are superb, as well as other actors. This is the role that revealed Freddie Highmore. He is really surprising here, and there is no doubt of his future success. Neverland's scenes are a real delight. This film will transport you to a magical elsewhere.

BOO !
I found interesting to talk about it now, knowing that the 2 is coming out soon. This is a great animated movie. It has very funny scenes and have much untapped potential. Maybe the 2 will correct that? The surroundings are excellent and the characters are very friendly. Boo, the little girl at the center of the disaster, is extremely well dubbed and lively. As often with Pixar, we can adopt different levels of reading. A movie that children will love and that their parents will also be able to enjoy.

Danger is real. Fear is a choice.
This has not much to do with a movie critic, but wtf your haircut Will !!! After Earth has made me have a good time. I liked the original concept. The scenery are beautiful, the special effects very well executed. Unfortunately, as often, the concept is not pushed through the end. The pair of actors (who bear their own film) play well, although this may not be their best game. The relationship between an authoritarian father and his son who has something to prove is well exploited. The soundtrack sticks also well the story. A nice movie, but not a masterpiece.

A great scientific discovery in 1952 enabled human life expectancy to reach over 100 years. Katy, aged 28, remembers her childhood in Hailsham with her friends Tommy and Ruth. It seems that the students are trapped within the confines of the school.... But in what purpose ?
What is the meaning of our life ?
Based on the book by Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go is a very special movie. It is deeply human and made thinking. But it is confusing and sometimes difficult to understand. But this is offset by Keira Knightley, perfect in her role of plague. But others are not left out and will give you contradictory feelings. A movie to see, maybe not twice.

War Witch by Kim Nguyen |
During a civil war in Africa, Komona, 12 year old, is abducted by rebels to become a child soldier. Because she is the only of her village who survived, people say she is a witch. Through an hallucinogen, she has visions who warn her of the enemy's proximity. She has only one friend, Magicien. Together, they flee the rebel army.
Is a child still a child when he grows up in the war ?
War Witch is more than a film. Or less according to taste. This is not the kind of story that you look to pass time. The tone wants to remain light in a very tough world. The actors are all very impressive, especially Rachel Mwanza of course, who won several awards for her performance. War Witch is above all a message : to explain, to understand, to show these things we want to hide. In the 21st century, children are taken from their families to fight in a conflict that is beyond them. But aside from that, we can see sub-saharan Africa, terrible and wonderful, so beautiful and wild.

In 1945, when World War II ends, there is a detached house lost in the fog on the island of Jersey. Grace and her two children with a rare and incurable disease live there, the children can't be in contact with the sunlight. She engages three mysterious people, who one day knocked on the door looking for work, as servants. But then strange events begin. The children then talk to their mother about the "Others" that they have seen several times.
They are there ....
Probably one of my favorite movies. Nicole Kidman is masterful. The sets and staging are perfect. They create an atmosphere conductive to stress. The disease of children adds even more to it. It is also very well distilled to the end. The story's end is psychologically horrible, as it should be in all films of the genre, and for once I did not see that coming !

What a surprise !
I put "Warm bodies" without expecting much. And what a nice surprise ! I laughed so hard while watching it. The post-apocalyptic world is convincing, the actors playing the zombies too. But what makes the strenght of the film is of course the character of R, cynical and funny, served by an extraordinary actor that this movie made me discover: Nicholas Hoult. We see R evolve, change as the playing of Hoult follows this trend with gusto. However, if you are looking for a zombie movie, go your way !

Les Misérables by Tom Hooper |
In 19th century's France, Les Misérables tells the stories of broken dreams. Jean Valjean promises Fantine to save her daughter Cosette from a tragic fate which she is herself a victim. But Valjean, since its release, is mercilessly hunted by the policeman Javert for failing to comply with his parole.
I dreamed a dream.....
Les Misérables is based on the wonderful (but dense) novel by Victor Hugo. However, this adaptation is more based on the musical. I can't say whether it is loyal or not, but we find wonderful songs that are familiar to us and will appeal our ears. The actors, who are not yet accustomed to this form of art, escaped with honor. Anne Hathaway also proves it with her version of the song "I dreamed a dream" that has probably earned her Oscar alone. The movie sometimes falls into the gap "all singing" while it is not necessary, and in the great effects specific to American cinema, however it is impossible to remain indifferent to the magnifiscence of events. As long as it lasts, you will live and breathe with the characters.

But when he learns that his father is dying, he comes to see him with his pregnant wife. In the plane, Will remembers a story of his father in which he claimed that, as child, he had wandered into a swamp and met a witch who had revealed the time of his death. Stuck in bed, Edward continues to tell his story....
Surrealistic !
This movie is based on the novel by Daniel Wallace. Big Fish revolves around a troubled relationship between a father and a son, a very emotional subjet that touches me. But it is above all an explosion of sun and color, an ode to art, an enchanting tribute served by talented actors. IT will delight the child in you, each new plan will widen your eyes. An original film, totally crazy and yet so simple. Undoubtedly one of the most personal work of Tim Burton.

One of the best movie role of Carrey.
The idea of a technology allowing to forget everything has a disgusting and so sweet side. But it is mainly about a love story. It is like every other, with its ups and downs, but with a rare intensity. The characters are endearing and well interpreted. Joel will see their accelerated history, knowing that it must end badly. However, we feel the happiness to see them so happy and spontaneous. I loved this side a bit surreal that leaves traces in the whole movie.

Thus began a long wandering that leads him to Lhasa. There he met the 14th Dalai Lama, aged 11, and they became friends.
A film like no other, very involving.
Based on the true story of mountain climber Heinrich Harrer, the movie however takes considerable liberties with the facts. It was widely seen as a propaganda in favor of Tibetan separatism. Since the film, Brad Pitt and the director are prohibited from Chinese territory !
Besides that, it is aesthetically pleasing. The moutain, the costumes, the colors, everything is beautiful to look at. It is through this movie I discovered Brad Pitt which does not deserve all the criticism he has suffered. The young actors depicting the Dalai-Lama are very impressive and radiate peace.

There is a reason why Ridley Scott is a master cinematographer and this is one of those in film form. Probably one of the best modern war movie at this moment in time. Some people said it was propaganda for the US Army; at best I'd say it's a 144 minutes movie about why you should not go to war. People gets hurt, lives are lost, families are destroyed. And sometimes despite thinking you're doing a favor to someone you'll find out pretty soon that no reason is a good reason to go fight. The Source by Radu Mihaileanu

She tries to persuade others that men should bring water and relieve women from this task. To convince them, they will go on strike for love.
In jihad against the weight of tradition
It sounds unbelievable but it is indeed today that it happens. This movie has many sources of inspiration, including a revolt of Turkish women who used the same trick to get water to the village. It is wonderfully played by its various stakeholders. Leila especially gave her character a life and a remarkable consistency. The movie speaks quickly unfortunately about many issues that deserve more attention. But the real core of the film is the music and the singing which advences women's struggle. It is also largely beyond the water. Because "the true source of women is not water, it is love".

Then, with his accountant, he tries to save as many lives as possible and even sabotages his own merchandise so it can't do harm
When horror reveals our humanity
A great movie again, masterfully directed by Steven Spielberg. It is based on the novel by Thomas Keneally and tells the true story of Oskar Schilnder and his factory. It widely deserves its good appreciation of the critical. It stages brilliant actors also. A story said that Ralph Fiennes in costume has scared a survivor of the factory ! The play of colors serves the atmosphere well, especially with the short and striking appearances of the "girl in red". A war movie a little different, very touching, and telling an event that realize it is maybe in the worst situation that we reveal our best.

This movie may seem maudlin, but Song for Marion is further proof of that English talent to mix comedy and genuine feelings.
